Clumping bentonite is the Egyptian standard: cheap, easy to scoop and sold in 5 to 20 litre bags. Silica crystals absorb more and are lighter to carry up stairs but cost more per month. Tofu and wood litters are flushable and low-dust, which matters in small flats and for cats with asthma. Scented litters mask odour but some cats refuse them; unscented is the safe first choice.

Why has my cat stopped using the tray?
