Choosing a shampoo

Pet skin has a different pH from ours, so use shampoos made for cats or dogs. Oatmeal and aloe formulas suit sensitive or itchy skin, medicated shampoos from Virbac treat fungal and bacterial problems on a vet's advice, and waterless foams or wipes keep cats fresh without a bath. Perfumes and deodorising sprays such as Omni Guard are for between baths, never on broken skin.

Questions about shampoo and perfume

How often should I bathe my dog?

Every four to six weeks for most dogs, more often in summer if they swim or get dirty, less for dogs with dry skin.

Do cats need baths?

Rarely. Healthy cats groom themselves; bathe only when soiled, elderly or on vet advice, using a cat shampoo and warm water.

Is pet perfume safe?

Yes when made for pets and used lightly on the coat, away from the face. Stop if you see scratching or sneezing.
